Prepare Your Catalog Before a WooCommerce to Shopify Migration — original editorial visual

Prepare product options, images, categories and source URLs before moving a WooCommerce catalog to Shopify, with a plan for verification.

Use this guide to review your actual store, document the important decisions and agree on the next useful change.

Inventory the catalog structure

Before exporting, list the product types, option patterns and category rules in the source store. Include products with unusual combinations, custom fields or downloadable content. Identify which details are standard data and which depend on a plugin. A straightforward product export may not capture the behavior behind a customized purchase journey. Record those requirements separately so the migration method can be chosen around the actual catalog.

Normalize without losing information

Review inconsistent option names, duplicate categories and missing identifiers. Decide on a consistent destination structure while retaining a recoverable source copy. Avoid mass cleanup that removes meaningful distinctions before the mapping is approved. Keep a record of transformations so imported values can be traced back. Clear mappings are more useful than a visually tidy spreadsheet whose changes nobody can explain later.

Plan image and content transfer

Check which images belong to each product and variant, and whether the source URLs will remain accessible during import. Include descriptions, specifications and useful supporting pages. Do not assume every plugin-generated field appears in the standard export. Inspect a small representative sample before transferring the full catalog. The sample should include difficult products, because they reveal gaps that simple single-option products may hide.

Map categories and customer routes

Decide how source categories will become Shopify collections and how customers will reach them. Preserve useful landing pages and prepare URL mappings for changed addresses. Technical import tags should not become confusing public labels. Review menu structure alongside collection rules, not as an unrelated design task. A correct product transfer is incomplete if customers cannot find those products through the storefront.

Compare the imported results

Use counts to identify obvious omissions, then compare individual records. Check titles, prices, SKUs, options, images, availability and important content. Review the rendered product page and cart as well as the admin. Record mismatches and fix the mapping before repeating the import. Repeatedly editing destination records by hand can hide a systematic issue and make the final transfer harder to reproduce.

Prepare the final reconciliation

If the source store continues trading, decide how new orders and stock changes will be handled after the initial export. Assign a cutoff and a responsible person. Keep the source available until the agreed checks are complete.
