How to Brief a Shopify Developer Without Missing Key Requirements — original editorial visual

Create a useful Shopify developer brief with clear journeys, required integrations, content ownership and reviewable acceptance checks.

Use this guide to review your actual store, document the important decisions and agree on the next useful change.

Describe the business problem

Start with the task customers or staff cannot complete comfortably. Explain the context, where the issue occurs and what a successful result would allow. “Make the store modern” leaves too much open to interpretation. “Customers need to compare compatible accessories before choosing a variant” gives the developer something concrete to investigate. Include examples from your actual catalog and distinguish essential requirements from optional ideas.

Map the affected journeys

Write the sequence from entry point to outcome. For a customer feature, include navigation, option selection, feedback and relevant error states. For an operational feature, describe where the data comes from, who changes it and where the result is used. Screenshots can illustrate the problem, but they should not replace a written explanation. Include mobile behavior and long content so the brief is not limited to one ideal screen.

List systems and constraints

Identify the theme, apps, external services and business rules involved. Record what must remain unchanged, such as product data, URLs or a working subscription integration. Mention plan-dependent capabilities without assuming they are available. If a requirement depends on another provider, identify who can confirm it. A realistic brief separates known facts from open questions so the team can resolve uncertainty before implementation.

Assign content and access owners

Specify who supplies copy, images, catalog information and approvals. Keep account ownership with the business and provide only the access needed for the work. Avoid putting sensitive credentials in a general project document. Confirm how the team will review a draft and where feedback should be recorded. Missing content and unclear approvals can delay a project even when the technical work is straightforward.

Define acceptance checks

Describe observable behavior rather than subjective finish alone. A filter should preserve the selected values; a form should explain invalid entries; a product selector should add the chosen variant. Include a small set of representative examples and expected outcomes. Agree how defects will be distinguished from new requests. The aim is a fair review that both the merchant and developer can reproduce.

Plan release and maintenance

State who approves publication, how the current version is backed up and who checks the live result. Ask what staff can maintain in the editor and what needs technical support. Record third-party costs separately from development work. Explore Intact Web’s Build or Improve services with your brief, examples and constraints to begin a focused conversation.
